Take It Slow
Who decided that the blues is cooler at warp speed? It amazes me how many covers of classic blues songs are done uptempo when the original is a slow, burning tune. Back in the day when I was hearing uptempo blues covers I thought they were pretty good. Then I heard the originals. Man, what a difference!
Songs like “Help Me” by Sonny Boy Williamson are a great example. Granted, it was copped from “Green Onions”, but “Green Onions” is a medium tempo instrumental where “Help Me” gets down in the alley and smokes at the slower tempo. Most bands that cover it play it at “Green Onions” tempo and lose the burn…

Goodbye, Gary Primich
Gary Primich left this life on September 23rd, 2007. He was 49 years old. I never got the opportunity to see Gary live, but enjoyed his recordings for many years.
